Thomas Padilla University of Nevada Las Vegas thomas.padilla@unlv.edu 9/20/2018 Description: This document describes a range of efforts to capture Twitter data associated with the 1 October mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada on 10/1/2017. This is the publicly accessible dataset. The dataset contains tweet identifiers. The dataset can be rehydrated using the “rehydrate” function of twarc. https://github.com/DocNow/twarc Total number of tweets collected during the specified period is 14,108,104. Data were gathered via concurrent queries to the Twitter API for all tweets containing the term "vegas", occurring September 29 - October 7 before 5:00 PM PT. Queries: twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-03" > until20171003_initiated_20171005.json twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-04" > until20171004_initiated_20171006.json twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-05" > until20171005_initiated_20171006.json twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-06" > until20171005_initiated_20171006.json twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-07" > until20171005_initiated_20171006.json twarc search "vegas until:2017-10-08" > until20171005_initiated_20171006.json Subsequently, each JSON file was combined and then deduplicated with twarc’s deduplicate.py. Each file was then sorted chronologically.
